PORTAL PARTNER PRESS May 2000

========May 4, 2000========

Hello again Portal kids! Another pretty good week. We got all the text changed on the portal sign up page to reflect the new "try it before you buy it" program. It went up on the 2nd, (two days ago) and it appears to be working. Already we have started getting more orders for pluses and pros than we are for power portals. I'm counting on all you old timers, especially moderators, to keep a close eye on the forums because I'm expecting them to start picking up with portal newbies asking questions. Let's help them out so that we don't lose them just because the program intimidated them.
MY WEEKLY PORTAL OWNER'S DIARY
This week was pretty much consumed with getting the site changed for the "try it before you buy it" stuff. I know often we forget how much work it is to make what seems at the beginning to be a few minor changes. Every change has to be gone through on every page on the site making sure that you're not confusing your visitors somewhere along the line.
I would appreciate any help I can get form the portal partners in taking a look at the site and making sure I haven't missed something. I also think it's a good idea for all the affiliates to breeze through the site and make sure you know how it works as well. It's obviously a pretty good little sales ploy and will make you more money by using it. www.searchkingportal4u.com
We are almost finished with moving all the magic-city domains onto the new server. I didn't realize it would take so long to move them. I thought it was just a matter of typing in a few characters and hitting the update button. Wrong! There's a few more little steps to it than that. We are getting the hang of it now though and it is moving along a lot quicker.
As for getting the database moved onto the hyperseek program for Searchking, that's another matter entirely. It's pretty much killing us. We have to go through each listing one at a time because of so much crap in the database. We started with just over a million sites in the index, then we lost about 300,000 with the crash. Then we deleted another 200,000 due to 404's and bad submission data. That still left right at 500,000. It takes a long time to go through that many, I don't care what kind of process you use.
Anyway, we just keep plugging along and as long as we're making progress, I'm fairly happy. Patience not being one of my virtues, of course I wish everything would go faster, but I am learning that things take as long as they take and there is no point in me getting so stressed out about it that I make my wife's life miserable because as we all know, when the wife ain't happy, NOBODY is happy.
WORTH REPEATING
LET'S MAKE A DEAL
The last two weeks I mentioned that I would like to hear from our partners with any success stories or just about any information that any of you felt had merit to the other partners. I've had a few e-mails but I'm still looking for more. Here's my deal for this week.
I want some testimonials. Send me your testimonial, your portal url and your e-mail address and I will install it on the portal sign up site. The reason I want your e-mail address and your url is because I expect people to be contacting you by e-mail and asking you questions. With your url, it will send traffic your way but the price may be that you would have to respond to some folks in regards to questions about the portal program.
Finally, after asking for articles, I was pleasantly surprised to see our own advertising manager ask for some space. I gladly gave it because Holly Nelson can do a lot for all our portal partners as far as giving advice on how to best use advertising for promoting your portal. Here's is her 2nd contribution.
HOLLY'S HINTS
Attracting Advertisers For Your Site, Part Two
So you have a web site and your building traffic, and hopefully you're showing a profit from your own product sales and/or through affiliate programs. Now it's time to look at attracting advertisers who will pay you to run their banners and/or text links on your site (and in your ezine or newsletter, if you have one.)
Last week we talked about knowing your Visitors. This week we are covering:
KNOW YOUR TRAFFIC
Potential advertisers are also going to want to know how many unique visitors your site generates (and the subscription base of your ezine/newsletter, if you have one.)
Many hosting companies make available your site's statistics - either as part of your monthly fee or for an additional fee. If they don't provide this service, you can find outside sources such as superstats.com, who offer various packages, depending on what stats you wish to track and how much you're willing to pay.
At the very least, you will need to know your monthly unique visitor count for each page of your web site. Most services provide stats on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis, and collect much more information than just unique visitors.
It is important to know how to accurately count your traffic also. There is a big difference between 'Hits' and 'Unique Visitors' your real statistic of measure.
Look at these definitions:
HITS---
1. The retrieval of any item, like a page or a graphic, from a Web server. For example, when a visitor calls up a Web page with four graphics, that's five hits, one for the page and four for the graphics. For this reason, hits often aren't a good indication of Web traffic. See page view.
2. Any time a piece of data matches criteria you set. For example, each of the matches from a Yahoo or any other search engine search is called a hit.
PAGE VIEWS---
The accessing of a Web page. Often used by sites to give advertisers a sense of traffic, a page view differs from a hit by counting only the number of times a page has been accessed, whereas a hit counts the number of times that all the elements in a page, including graphics, have been accessed. Page views, however, have become tougher and tougher to gauge, since pages can include frames that divide them into separate parts.
UNIQUE VISITORS---
A visitor that can be qualified as a unique individual within a given period of time. The period of time can vary, but is usually between a half hour and an hour. [TRAFFIC] This qualification comes through a tracking process of some kind that records the number of views a particular page gets from the same IP address or records the same information through some sort of mandatory registration process. (the last not being a very user friendly method of maintaining traffic).
There are many software applications out there that can log all of these types of statistics. If any of you have some favorites please email me at: ecomm@acninc.net and your suggestions will be featured in the 5 Minute Marketing Mailing List.
Next week we will go into HOW TO SET YOUR PRICES.

If you would like to contact Holly for personal help with advertising, (especially Searchking advertising), her e-mail is ecomm@acninc.net
ATTENTION AFFILIATES!
Now that the "try it before you buy it" offer is up at Searchking Portal 4 u, we could use some effective banners that will help make the close. I think the TIBYBI thing is going to really increase the heck out of our sales. Creating effective banners has never been my strong point so again I'd like to ask that some of you affiliates help me out in making some "hot" banners that push the fact that they can try a portal out at no risk.
Any killer banner you make just send to Mike at webmaster@searchking.com and he'll get it installed on the affiliate banner page at www.searchkingportal4u.com/adbanners.htm
HOW ABOUT SOME MORE GOOD IDEAS?
Check this out!

Bob,
I put up a page www.healthybiz2000.com/portals.htm with some ideas for portals.

CLOSING
Well, that's enough out of me for this week. Believe it or not, I try very hard not to write these things too long. It's hard because I think I must have been a Baptist preacher in a former life or something because I CAN go on, but I know we're all busy people. I mean, after all, we run internet portals.
Keep those stories, testimonials and tips coming! See you next week.
YOU KIDS SETTLE DOWN! DON'T MAKE ME COME UP THERE!
Love ya'll

========May 11, 2000========

Whew, what a week! Sorry the PPP is a little late, it's just that I've had a hard time finding the 30 minutes or so it takes to write it. I'm always a little surprised that anyone is actually wanting to read anything I write and that makes me tend to not place the importance of getting it out on time that it deserves. I'll try to do better in the future.
MY WEEKLY PORTAL OWNER'S DIARY
This week has been pretty much consumed with working with the Oracle people. I've been wanting to hire this database consultant company that has been a partner with Oracle for a long time. We made a deal this past week and I would dearly love to make it happen but I'm a little short on money. I've had to spend a lot of time developing a strategy of making money appear from nowhere. It's a little exhausting.
Ever since the split between Searchking and Sarge of the Worxco and of course the hard drive crash back in January of this year, most of the features that made SK a unique search service have been unavailable. I desperately want those features back and Oracle and the software people I'm working with can make that happen.
My feeling is that many of the established services are having a hard time determining how best to determine what relevancy is and how best to display relevant sites to best increase their user base and of course translate that into profits. This is causing a lot of confusion in the industry and I believe that a unique service such as SK has a very good chance of capturing it's share of the searching market. I'm not saying that SK is any better, just different and just as good at determining relevance as any other system.
I believe there is a market share to be gained by simply letting people choose the keywords they want to be found under and then letting the public votes be the only thing that determines their placement. With the old SK, you could submit your site, CHOOSE your keywords and regardless of what was in your html or meta tags or anything else for that matter, you were instantly added to the database. In addition, we would add enough relevancy points to every submission so that we could guarantee a top 20 placement in the engine for at least some of the keywords you picked. From there, every vote your site got either raised or lowered your relevancy points across the board. Every time you got a vote, (we tracked IP's so that one person could only vote once every 60 days), we would send you an e-mail telling you the results of that vote. The purpose of this was to "train" webmasters how to best satisfy the public. In other words, if you were getting no votes on one of your keywords that would be pulling down the points for all your keywords. So with instant editing, (I forgot to mention that we also offered instant editing), all you had to do was tweak your keyword selection until you started getting yes votes for all your keywords which would eventually put you and keep you at the top for all your keywords.
As for the voting, we did not send people to a site via the links in the results. We actually went and got the site for you and then we could leave a very small window at the bottom of the screen that had the voting feature. Every time you voted on a site, that site would either raise or lower depending on how you voted before you could hit the back button to the engine. This did a lot for keeping spam at a minimum because you could spam Sk all you wanted BUT the first time you got a no vote you're site started dropping and most spammers rely on submitting a lot of pages fast and our system made it a waste of a spammers time so that eventually they could not afford to take the time to keep resubmitting unless we turned them into honest webmasters and they actually started providing quality content. We had several filters to keep you from re-submitting the same page so eventually, all the sites at the top of any keyword return were all reviewed by the public. In the 12 months or so that we actually had all these features working right, we were able to prove that you could assume all submissions were honest and that the public CAN actually determine quality and relevance as well, if not better, than any single human reviewer or any computer program. Fair, honest and relevant. Huh what a concept. That's why it's so important for me to get those features working again.
All this brings me to the point of this. I made the deal with Oracle but I'm about $20,000 short. I need to raise some money pretty quick. Here's a post I made in the forums a couple of days ago.

I need some help and wonder if some of you might not be able to help a little. I've been working with Oracle for over a year now to try to get it for Searchking. We've finally made a deal BUT, I'm about $20,000 short. After pacing the floor for a couple of nights I have something in mind of how to raise the money without having to sell off my stock. One of my assets include over 200 domains. These are all promotional domains that we have accumulated over the last two or three years due to clients canceling, (just because you're #1 on AV doesn't mean you're making enough money to keep paying me). So, if I could just sell a few of these for about a grand, I'd have the money for Oracle without having to sacrifice too much. Now, you can buy domains all day long for less than a couple of hundred bucks so what am I going to do to convince people that paying me over a thousand is a good deal? First of all, I've got domains like stockmarkettraining4u.com that's #1 on AV under stock broker. I've got web hosting sites, gambling sites, home based business sites etc. So not only can they get the domains but they can keep the placements as well, (at least until they change everything and lose their positions). I wasn't sure that was enough so I added another little goody. Searchking has been running text banners above the results for about a month. These banners are kicking butt compared to the old graphic rotating banners that we've all seen and can't remember. To see an example just go to Searchking.com and type in hotels or credit cards for example. See the listing with the little red dollar sign? Google and about.com have also started offering these kinds of ads. Direct hit does it kinda but they list them to the right of the results. NO GOOD! I had over 8000 impressions for my sponsorship and 3 click thrus. The text banners HAVE to go right above the results because that's where searchers are looking. Duh. Also we are starting to run this script on our partners' portal sites. So I'm going to throw in 10 keyword text banners with every domain FREE for a year! Once we get Oracle installed, all the old Searchking features will actually work again and I think we will quickly start hitting that 2 - 5- 10 million page views a month. With the features working, the speed issues addressed and our 1500 portal partners, I think this is a very attainable goal making this a pretty incredible deal. My problem is I'm not sure how to get the word out quickly. I can't wait for 6 weeks to see if DMOZ will list a time sensitive site so I don't think search engines are my way to go other than just putting banners on SK. I need help and I need it quickly. I need ideas. Also I'll pay a 20% commission to any moderators here if you have a client that may be interested, just be sure to let me know who it came from and I'll get you your money. I put up a quick page at www.searchking.com/domains4sale.htm and I wouldn't mind some input on that either if you think you may know of a way I can improve it. I would also consider any serious private investment.
HELP --- ANYBODY!

That's the post. Now, just for Portal partners. I will offer any portal partner a top spot text banner ad on SK and all the new portal pluses that come in for 10 keywords for the next 24 months. Two years - top spot - text banner - $1000. That works out to just $4.16 per month per keyword. If you like, you're welcome to call me at 405-386-4806 and I will help you pick good keywords. This is a VERY limited time offer. Trust me as soon as I rake up the $20,000, this offer is over.
The hardest working man in search business.

Ok, that's the deal. the part of this deal that I wanted to elaborate on is the 10 keyword text banner ads for 2 years exclusive to the portal partners. I realize it's a lot of money in web dollars BUT, in the opinion of this portal owner I think it's the one thing that makes the most sense. For one thing, the script displays ads for the plural and the singular so book gets you books as well. This means that you are actually going to be getting more than the 10 keywords. It also makes sense because they are working even at the traffic level we're at now. I've spoken to several of our partners that took the $10 a month keyword deal last month and so far I've not had a single complaint. I can't believe that other services have not figured this out yet. When someone does a search, they aren't looking at the top of the page for another banner with a flying monkey on it, they are looking at the search results! Duh! That's where that text banner goes. We are hearing numbers like 90 an 95% click thrus!!! Well it doesn't take a million impressions to make a few bucks with those kind of click thrus.
Are you a gambler? I realize that you may be asking, "so how many hits am I gonna get?" The answer is I don't have any idea. We may not grow much at all, however I think that it is pretty unlikely at the rate we're signing up new portal partners, (the try it before you buy it thing seems to be working pretty well), but what if I'm right and we get SK features all working again and now two years down the road we're doing 20 or 30 million page views a month. What if I'm wrong and there's not a market on the web for a more honest and fair search service BUT, what if I'm right?
Finally, I will go one step further with the portal partners only. I'll offer a half for half deal. In other words if $1000 is simply out of your price range, but you could swing half of that, I'll take $500 for 10 keywords for one year. I'll even take $100 for 10 keyword banners for two months.
Now the drawback is for the $100 is that you are going to be impressed with the results and when the two months are up, you are going to want the year deal. No dice! After the two months, if you want to keep the ads running, it's going to be regular price right off the price list. (You can see the price list at cronus.safe-order.net/magic-city/holly/ then just click on the price list link.
Now, if I've hit the magic button with anybody and convinced you that maybe now is the time to trust somebody on the net and just do it e-mail me personally at bobking@searchking.com and I'll send you an e-mail with the "deal" in writing and get your ads running.
TRAFFIC DON'T COUNT --- SALES DO!
You kids all know me. I'm always beggin' for help. Well I get a lot of it. Jim Raleigh for example sent me a very cool letter giving me a lot of really great tips. I was planning on running his e-mail to share his ideas this week but then just yesterday I got an e-mail from a partner from Canada and it blew me away. In my opinion, this person was SO on the money about our portal sign up page that I feel I would be doing all my portal partners a dis-service by not sharing it.
He's referring directly to searchkingportal4u.com, the sign up page, but his advice is very easily applied to any commercial web site. I urge you to read it carefully, (I read it three times myself), and learn how to apply as many principles as possible to your own site. It's a little long but it's well worth the read.
Here ya go.

Hi there BobKing, My name is ******* from Montreal, Canada. Portal partner WebBiz.SearchKing.com (sorry, I haven't had much time to work it yet but I will start it very soon, a lot is on paper already). I can tell you however that I truly believe in the full potential of your portal directories concept. At your request in the Press, I took the time to visit your new www.searchkingportal4u.com and thought that since you give so much of yourself, and your time to help your peers, I could at least take the time to give you some feedback about your hard and nice work. I hope I can be of any help. Ok, here we go...I click on the link, I'm connected with a 56k modem and my actual speed is 44000bps, the page loads fast enough, about 6-7 seconds for the principal and up to 10 seconds including the top banner. Colors and layout are very nice looking, well matched, good choices of font face and size, easy to read, the SearchKingPortal 4 U top graphic is simple, clear, and attractive. Unfortunately though, the top banner keeps my eyes away from the top graphic, it may take a few seconds for the visitor to find out where he exactly is. Let me ask you a question Bob. Do you desperately need that banner on the top of *this* particular page? Another one. What is the _most wanted response_ you do expect from the visitors on that page? If it includes to send me away, which I think it's not, then keep the banner there. However, I believe that you want to tell me something here, right? You want to SELL me something here, so please don't get my attention away, and bring me right to the point from the start. Grab my ATTENTION! instead... From a portal partner's point of view, reading a "personal message from the CEO" might be interesting, we all already know what we're talking about, and quite frankly Bob, I know that you always write from the bottom of your heart and it's always interesting to read you. From an outside visitor's p-o-v though, I mean at first, why would I want to read a message from this CEO? Because this is exactly the headline I see, right under the "banner". Umm... and why would this CEO want to tell me something? Before you tell me your personal message, why don't you tell me _right up front_ what's in it for me here? Grab my attention up front, by asking a question or two or providing a few answers. Then let me know you have a solution, and provide me with a short (bulleted) list of the most powerful benefits I'm gonna get here. For example, think about your pre-message, the message you'll use to bring people here. Is it a question? Then, answer on the spot when they click. Is it an affirmation? Then provide a confirmation when they click. Let's say you have a banner somewhere that says: "Yahoo! You can have it too!" You can start your main page with:--"Welcome, That's right, now you can profit from the new trend on the Internet. Start building your own community around your own specialized portal directory, using the same technology as Yahoo!..."--Ok, now I've just read your message (on the main page) and it's straight from the heart as always. However, the message assumes that the reader already knows what we're talking about here, which is not yet the case. This message would perfectly fit at another stage of the (sale) presentation, mostly near the end, or as P.S., or at the top of a FAQ page. Ho, and btw, since you're talking about it in your message, what if I'm interested and want to know more but I'm in a hurry, may I subscribe to something somewhere, right there, under my eyes? I do that often when I see something of interest and I just don't have the time to look through it at the moment. If I see a form offering a newsletter, I subscribe! I'd put a subscribe form right on the top left position of your pages, and right bottom. This way, even if they don't sign-up now, for a portal, you can still send the Portal Partner Press to these folks to keep them informed about developments, and have them sneak around the Forums and fellow partners' portals, they'll sign-up, if they get the message of course, it's just a matter of time. ;) Don't lose the focus that this specific page is for *sales*, this is NOT a portal page, don't let me choose from a bunch of links, I might also choose to click away. YOU, provide the sale presentation about what you have to offer, guide your visitor (me) through the presentation, make me click here, and here, and then there, tell me what to do next, and lead me to the signup page. If you're to provide me with a menu to jump elsewhere on the site, don't put it in a manner to keep me away from focusing on the main presentation (your message). I'm talking about the left menu blue bar, I'd put this menu at the bottom of the pages, and also add a scrolling menu at the top of the other pages, but the main page. One last thing. Now I notice that you've put some benefits at the bottom of the page, as I explained above, this is not where they belong, you should put them a lot higher in the presentation. And you should be more specific with these benefits. For example:- Listing in the SearchKing Web Directory exclusive to Portal partners.- Be listed on a X zillions page views per day. (Exclusive to Portal partners, from SearchKing Web Directory.) See my points? :) Applying these principles, you will, at least, double your responses, positive. Please excuse my English as my mother tongue is French, I'm learning here... :) Keep up the good work, Bob, I like what you're doing. Warm regards,
P.S. If you have any specific questions regarding, marketing, affiliate marketing, Internet and communication technologies, feel free to ask.
P.S.S. Nice picture there Bob... why don't you look at the camera? ;-)

Well, that's it for this week. Sorry this issue ended up being so long, (I bet I get a few unsubscribe requests this week), but I kinda got into it this week.

========May 18, 2000========

Hello all y'all. Hope everyone is doin' fine as frog hair!
After reading back thru last week's PPP, I felt it may have gotten a little long-winded, so this week I'll try to shorten it up a bit.
MY WEEKLY PORTAL OWNER'S DIARY
This week has been wheeler and dealer week. For those of you that actually read the PPP last week, you may remember the "deals" I was offering. The top placed domains for sale and the text banner keyword advertising for $4.61 per month. For those of you who have no idea of what I'm talking about, I'll repeat the offer again later in this issue. If you don't know what I'm talking about now, then you're caught and I know you didn't read last weeks issue and you might as well scroll on down now because you will probably find the next few little paragraphs a little confusing.
As all you good little portal partners know, I announced in last week's issue that I was wanting to raise $20,000. I've sold three domains and two $1000 advertising deals this week. That puts me at about 25% of my goal in just one week. Not too shabby! (actually only 5 days. Remember I was two days late in getting the PPP out last week).
Also, I've focused a little harder on Magic-city this past week and we also picked up several new accounts. However, that doesn't really help me with my goal because, while it's my pen that writes the checks for both companies, Magic-city is Magic-city and Searchking is Searchking. They are two separate companies with different principles in each. It does help in some respects in that now this week Kathi and I can eat taters with our beans and even a little side-meat, (not everyday of course but maybe for our Sunday supper), but outside of a little extra gravy on our plates, I still need to hit my goal for Searchking and that doesn't really have anything to do with Magic-city. I'm just braggin' a little I guess cuz I'm as proud as an old hog with new mud on me at the performance of everyone concerned. Of course, I think the people who took me up on my offers are the smartest people on the planet, but I'm also really proud of how all my staff jumped in and went the extra mile for me. Actually, just about everyone that works around me has already walked so many extra miles they're all bound to have holes in their loafers by now, it's just that I often get too involved in my own little world and don't give them enough credit for all they do for me and you.
As I've said before, the reason I do this little weekly portal owner's diary is because I don't see your portal as any different than mine and because I've been doing it longer, made more mistakes and lost more money than most of my portal partners, I want to think that some of what I've learned the hard way may make your row a little easier to hoe. This whole thing about raising money has gotten me a little flack. I've had a few letters this week telling me that I shouldn't talk so openly about needing money because it makes me appear desperate. I don't see it as being desperate. I simply see it as being determined.
You see, even if you don't sell a product or service on your portal, you still have expenses. Your computer, your connectivity and your time all are an expense and the hard to swallow fact is, if you don't generate enough revenue to pay those expenses, you will be gone. Just don't pay your measly $35 a year renewal fee to Internic and see how long it takes to become cyber history. I've owned several businesses over the years and one thing I know for a fact --- YOU CAN ALWAYS DO MORE WITH MORE MONEY!
I don't care what kind of income your website generates, I can promise you that there will come a time that you wish you had more money so you could get that new server or that new program or the new shoes or the etc, etc. Well, that time is just about everyday for me and my guess is that there are several people reading this now, (assuming of course anybody really reads the PPP), that just today wished they had more money. I'm not as much of a wisher as I am a "let's go do it" kind of guy. Remember the cartoon of the two vultures sitting in a tree with the sun beating down on them and one vulture looks at the other and the caption reads, "patience my ass - I'm gonna go kill something"? Well, I guess I'm a little like that vulture. I believe God helps those that help themselves.
With all of that said, I want to repeat the offer again this week. I still have 3/4ths of the way to go so I'm going to keep pushing.
LET'S MAKE A DEAL!

Now the drawback for the $100 is that you are going to be impressed with the results and when the two months are up, you are going to want the year deal.
AFFILIATES UNITE!
We are now up to 50 affiliates. Some of you should have your checks by now. They went out on the 15th just like I said they would. The problem is that not enough of you got one. The problem is not getting traffic. We have one affiliate who had over 175 hits this past month, but no sales.
We are all faced with the fact that we need to educate the public. I'm afraid most people on the net simply aren't familiar with the terminology. I think they simply don't know what a portal is or what it can do for them. Your job as an affiliate is to educate them. Remember that being a successful affiliate and actually making money requires a commitment on your part as well as mine.
I think we can all agree that a year from now, there are going to be literally thousands and thousands of people running their own portals. So where are they going to get the tools to do that. Well, they should be getting them from us. We're one of the portal pioneers. We have an excellent program and an excellent pricing structure and let's not forget that no one is able to offer more experience in the running of your own portal than we are. We were one of the very first!
I'm looking for a motivated affiliate to show the other affiliates just how much you can make from this. Someone who will make some posts in forums, run some ads, and most importantly write and submit some articles for e-zines of course using your page as a link so that you get credit for the sale. Basically, just tell people about the benefits of the program. Remember that there are a lot of programs out there that you can join and simply run a banner on your site, BUT, only you can decide whether to actually make any money from it or just wait and see if anything happens.
If you need help, let me know and I will do anything I can to help. I WANT to see you making money because that's how this whole thing works.
The "try it before you buy it" strategy is working. It's only the middle of the month and our sales have doubled last month already. Naturally, the free portals are way down, but the pluses and pros are way up! That is exactly what we were wanting. Try it before you buy it is a great way to go. The customer has absolutely no risk! It's honest, fair and up-front. It works! So, let's tell the world about it and let me see some affiliates start making some real money!
CLOSING
I promised to keep this issue shorter so I guess I'll stop here. I get this mental picture of some of your faces looking like a chicken laying a turkey egg and thinking, "Jeez, will this guy ever shut up?" Well, the answer to that question is --- probably not, but I will show a little mercy and let this be it for this week.
See you next week and keep those letters with ideas, suggestions and complaints coming. I love getting them!
Love Y'all
Bob

========May 24, 2000========

Happy Memorial Day to all. Memorial Day is an important holiday to Americans. It's purpose is to remember our fallen war heroes, those who have fought and died in the name of freedom and the American way of life. I think if we were really honest, it's importance to Americans has more to do with the fact that it is a 3 day holiday more so than a day of remembrance. I know that during this 3 day holiday you will be able to find a lot more people at lakes and amusement parks than you will at any cemetery or memorial.
I would like to encourage everyone to take this time to not only remember the ones who have given so much for so many in military service, but to also remember all the heroes who did their part without benefit of rank or uniform. Especially the women. I would venture to guess that we have far more heroes that were never in the service that deserve our respect and remembrance, than we do soldiers.
I'm certainly not saying that our fallen service men don't deserve a lot of credit. It is an incredible thing about humans that they will lay down their most precious possession, their own life, for an ideal, a cause, a belief. It's one of the things that makes me have so much faith in the basic goodness of mankind.
It's just that I feel that most of the time, we overlook the contribution of the people who kept those home fires burning. People who sacrificed every bit as much as the men in uniform. I'm talking about our grandmothers, our sisters, our daughters and of course our moms. While you're saluting the flag at parades or laying wreaths at the grave of a husband or son who has passed on, try to also remember the sacrifices made by the ones who cooked your meals, who kept you in clean clothes, who provided you with love and nurturing even when they needed those same things themselves just as bad as you did.
I know that most of the women in my past were some of the hardest working people I've ever known. People who toiled all day, every day and never even expected any recognition. Well, whether they expected it or not, they certainly deserve it. I think it is so important for us to remember our past, our roots and our heritage. Those things come from the women in our past every bit as much as they come from the men. I believe even more.
MY WEEKLY PORTAL OWNER'S DIARY
As portal owners, in fact, as web site owners, we are always looking for ways to improve our sites and thereby improve our business. Often the ideas we come up with and the services and features that we would like to add, require scripts or programs. A very small percentage of us are blessed with the ability to write custom scripts and programs on our own. I am not.
Like most of us, I am forced to trying to figure out how, and where to find a script that I want. First I try to think of what a program like what I think I want might be commonly known as. I then hit the search engine circuit and start typing in what I think I need to look for. Of course since it's probably a unique idea, there is not a term for the program I'm looking for. So now what?
Obviously I need to find someone who has the ability to write custom programs at a price I can afford, (that is usually the tricky part. The price thing). So, how do I go about finding that someone? Trust me -- it ain't easy. Even when you do find someone that says they can do it, how do you know that you can trust them? That they really are able to provide what they said they could? Believe it or not, I've had a lot more problems in finding people that actually deliver than I have had in finding people who said they could deliver. Remember, guaranteeing results is not the same thing as actually delivering results. I may very well hold the record in Oklahoma City for hiring the most people for the most money with the least results.
I have had a need for a custom script for the portal program from the very beginning. Almost from the day the portal program signed up our first portal partner, I knew that this program needed to be much easier to operate in order to appeal to the general public. Searchking has always been known as a webmaster-friendly search engine, but the whole idea of offering topic specific portals to the general net community had very little to do with your skill level as a webmaster and much more to do with your skill level in the specific topic you chose to build your portal about. I made the deal with Hyperseek because I believed, (and still do), that it was the absolute best program of it's type available. I knew the power it had and I also knew how challenging it could be to actually run for someone who was more concerned about running their business than they were about learning cgi.
So I thought, "well, I'll just find someone to build me a simple interface for the program". It makes me smile thinking back to then. It seemed at every turn I kept running into more and more problems with being able to actually get this script. I talked to dozens of people. I searched dozens of search engines. I posted in dozens of forums. I whined, I cried, I pouted, I promised, I begged, and I threatened. This was important enough to me and my business that I was determined to not give up. I didn't and that's when I discovered the key to success with installing custom scripts and programs. DON'T GIVE UP!
In this new cyber world of ours, all things are possible. I firmly believe that you can not come up with an idea for a program that can not be done. If you can't find one already available, it doesn't mean it can't be done. It just means that it hasn't been done yet!
One tip I would like to pass along to all you portal owners is that when looking for a custom program, be as specific as absolutely possible. The more vague you are the more likely it is you will not get what you want. The job of a programmer is to take what you tell them and write a script to do what you said you wanted it to do. The programmer can not read your mind and it's not his job to figure out what you want. So when you get these ideas, don't just start contacting programmers and asking them what it would cost for a script like you envision. Actually sit down and go through the process, so you can tell the programmer exactly what you want and how you want it.
I have found the biggest complaints that programmers have is that clients won't spend the time to figure out what they want. They are always getting calls with people giving them some very general overview of what killer app they have in mind only to discover down the road that they forgot to mention that the script also needed to track IP's or something or it wouldn't work. This program not working the way you want is usually not the programmers fault. It is usually yours because you didn't spend the time or do the work to be able to tell the programmer what you wanted. I'm as guilty of this as anybody. How do you think I learned this little tidbit?
So after almost six months of very frustrating experiences, I've got my script!! I can't wait because I truly believe it is the single most important factor in making the Searchking portal program a huge success with thousands and thousands of portal partners. I'm going to be going into specifics a little further down in this issue because I want to announce it to the affiliates first and foremost but my point is simply that when you decide to add some feature that is going to require a custom program, you can save yourself a lot of grief if you:
#1. know what you want and how you want it
#2. DON'T GIVE UP!
One other thing I'd like to pass along. We all have a tremendous advantage over the rest of the world. We have the forums and the portal partners. This script that I am talking about was written by a portal partner. We have a lot of VERY talented people involved with us as portal partners and all of us should be very open to discussing ideas that will improve our sites because what is good for one of us is good for all of us. Searchking has provided us all with a very valuable resource that is not available to all those poor folks out there who don't have a portal. The partners and the forums. Use them!
AFFILIATE UPDATE
Are you ready to start making some money??
As I've discussed many times before, I believe the secret of real success with this portal program is in making setting up a portal as easy as setting up a geocities homepage. It's been a long hard road but I finally have the script. We're testing it now and it should be installed and online within a couple of weeks.
With this script, when you first log into your admin, you will be presented with two links. The EZ builder and the advanced. With the EZ builder, simply type in your title and text, type in your categories, sub-categories, hit enter and you're in the portal business. All the features that hyperseek has will be set by default so that basically the only thing you can do is add and delete sites to your engine, BUT, you can do that in minutes. Also you can switch back and forth from the EZ to the advanced with a mouse click. This means that a new portal partner can have their portal up running in about 15 minutes and then start "playing" around with the advanced stuff so they can learn it a step at a time without having to risk losing their database or any of the settings they already have.
This was the thing that I was most concerned about. It appeared in the beginning that once you selected the EZ, you could not use the advanced and you were on your own. Thanks to the talents of one of our own portal partners, the script now is much more valuable in the respect that you can learn to use all the features at your own pace and without your portal being down.
With the EZ builder and Oracle getting installed on Searchking, it's going to be a whole new ballgame with a lot more home runs. We will start making buttons and banners proclaiming the virtues of the world's only 15 minute portal!
STRATEGY FORUM
You guys know how I'm always begging for input from the portal partners on different issues. It's not just that I want all the partners involved, it's often that I am faced with decisions that I'm simply not sure about how to make.
I would like to start a private discussion forum by e-mail of not less than 4 and not more than 10 partners for the sole purpose of discussing and implementing strategy for the portal program. There are so many opportunities starting to open up for Searchking. The phone is ringing off the hook with people wanting to "partner" with us. It looks like usually "partnering" means a way of getting our traffic without having to pay us anything for it but I do sense that there are some of these things that are worth looking into. I'd like the input of some other savvy net partners to help me decide which are of value and which are not.
Also, and this is the most important, I have a lot of options as to how to make this program grow. Most of this stuff comes down to marketing decisions. Should I offer the portal plus for free? Should I develop a paid portal pro that is less expensive by limiting some of the features? Should I offer web hosting plus? A web host that gives you all the features of a low cost hosting solution PLUS your own hyperseek engine? These are just a few of the questions I need to make decisions on.
If any of you would like to be a part of deciding which way it goes, please let me know. Within a week or so, I'll set up a kind of e-mail discussion list. I know there is software out there to do this kind of thing but I'm not familiar with it and I don't really have the spare time to learn it right now so in the beginning at least, it will just be me forwarding the messages. Simple but effective. Just send me an e-mail letting me know briefly why you would like to be on this discussion list and what you feel you could contribute. The list will be compiled by the three founding members voting on the people who apply. The three founders of course are me, Shane Dolby and Mike Rotter.
I think this is going to be the year of the Searchking and the more help I can get, the better off we'll all be.

Finally, I'm still offering the keyword text banner ad deals.
10 keywords - top spot 2 years - $1000
10 keywords - 1 year - $500
10 keywords - 2 months - $100

Well, that's it for this week gang.
Love y'all

========May 30, 2000========

Well the holiday is over and it's back to work. I don't know about you, but it seems like those three day weekend thingees make it a lot harder to get back in the swing of things than just the two day ones. Of course I'm not talking about me. Memorial day is a work day just like any other day for me and Kathi. With the Magic-city office being closed that just meant that we could do some work without being interrupted by phone calls. It just seems to me like anytime there's a holiday, the week before and the week after, business gets a little off track. Oh sure everybody keeps drawing a check, it's just that not a lot of work gets done.
I'm not complaining, (yeah right!), because everyone I'm involved with all work very hard and I think it's important that they take the time to play hard as well. Living good is all about moderation and balance and a little goofing off now and then never killed anybody. Well, except for all of the alcohol related accidents, drownings and occasional domestic squabble.
Down to PPP business.
MY WEEKLY PORTAL OWNER'S DIARY
This week's diary has nothing to do with tricky scripts or cgi or perl. It has to do with people. Real living, breathing, THINKING people. I may have very well just pulled off one of the best deals in the history of the internet. I'm talking about the Strategic Planning forum I mentioned last week.
Over two years ago I made some posts in some forums about trying to put together an internet marketing super-group whose purpose was to identify problems and come up with solutions in regards to applying traditional business practices to the internet. It appears to me that the vast majority of even the most successful websites are having a very difficult time in getting their sales to click thru ratios above the single digit mark. That makes me believe that someone needs to learn how to make a website effectively address the 4 key steps to making a sale. That is
Feature
Benefit
Action
Overcoming Objections
I've been in business for myself for over 30 years in several different types of businesses from the rent-to-own industry to a commercial printing company to a toy manufacturing business. With each business, there were always problems specific to that product or service that had to be addressed and solutions devised in order for the business to generate income. The key to coming up with those solutions was always Strategic Planning.
Well, I could not get the super group idea off the ground two years ago. Maybe the net wasn't ready but my guess is that it was me that wasn't ready. Well, I'm ready now!
I had a small group of people with incredible qualifications respond to me asking to be a part of the forum. I made some very strict rules, outlined a basic procedure and developed a code of ethics that I insisted had to be signed and I am very happy to say, we have our Strategic Planning forum. The goal of this forum is to develop effective internet marketing techniques that we can apply to virtually any internet business and then provide the training and the tools to make these techniques available to our portal partners. What we are going to attempt to do is nothing short of changing the way the internet works!
For example, banner ads are everywhere we go on the net. Studies show that the vast majority of these ads pull less than a 1% response. That is dismal. Somebody, somewhere needs to swallow the pill and accept the fact that these things don't work and that the advertisers lose, the website owners lose and the internet surfer loses. All we are doing is wasting bandwidth. Now, some old fart from Oklahoma starts offering text banner ads above the results on a search engine and BINGO - 85 - 90 and 95% click thru ratios. Put the ad where the potential customer is looking, make it targeted and relevant to the keyword and guess what - it works!
That is the kind of stuff that we will be dealing with in the Planning forum. We will be focusing on how best to get Searchking and the portal program exposed, growing and profitable. With each step we will be passing what we learn on to all of you. It's one of the most exciting things I've ever gotten involved in and I'm chomping at the bit to get started.
The reason I devoted this issue of the PPP to this topic is to encourage all of you to follow suit. Planning is the single most important part of determining whether your web business is a success or a failure. Our search engine placement service, Magic-city, has represented over 2000 clients in the last four years and the vast majority of those have gone out of business. We got every single one of them traffic but being #1 on Alta Vista is not the same thing as making deposits into your bank account. Most of those sites went broke from lack of planning. Their sites weren't functional, the order forms were confusing, the text didn't match up to the keywords they selected and so forth. All of those problems could have and should have been addressed in the planning stages. Far too many people just throw up a site thinking if they just get traffic, they will get sales and nothing could be further from the truth.
A lot of people don't really understand the concept of planning let alone the value. That's why this forum is going to have such an incredible impact on all of our sites. That's why this article is so important to you as a portal owner. If you don't understand strategic planning -- learn! Get people involved with you that can help. Research, surf the net, ask friends, visit forums and above all focus on it. I want all of you to see your dreams come true and it is not very likely to happen if you don't plan for it.
ORACLE UPDATE
I've been as busy as a cat tryin' to bury poop on a frozen pond again this week trying to raise the capital for Oracle. I'm half way there! Whew! Honestly I thought it would be a little easier than it's been but still, raking up almost $10,000 in a little over three weeks ain't too shabby. It's just a little hard thinking about what I've had to give up so far and still only half way.
I can't give up! Searchking has over 30,000 submissions that have not been indexed yet. They're just sitting there waiting for me to get everything fixed. Traffic is going up very nicely, (I can't really understand why), in spite of the fact that the features aren't working. If I can just get this thing put together, I believe it will double the traffic in about 30 to 60 days. That would put us at 2 million page views a month. Once I do get Oracle installed and the features working, I strongly urge you to take the portal directory more seriously and get your portal listed. We are already getting over 30% of our traffic going into the directory and as more of you get in there and more people come to realize the value of getting back a portal about a keyword as opposed to just getting a list of url's, I can promise you this is going to be one of the best things about having an SK portal.
If your portal is not in the directory, get it in there now!! Remember the directory is for portal partners exclusively so the url is not available to the general public. I always have the url at the bottom of each PPP but for those of you who don't read down that far, (I don't really blame you, I usually don't either), here it is: www.searchking.com/bin/add_url.cgi?C=
SHAMELESS PLUG
I'm still wanting to sell those promotional domains I own. As I said before, I've got domains covering just about every industry that's popular on the net. They are well placed, they come with personal consulting from me, they come with the 10 keyword text banner ads and best of all, you'll start getting traffic immediately instead of having to build a page, submit it and wait for weeks and weeks to see if you got lucky enough to get good placements. When you compare the cost of your time in trying to get those top placements and consider the value of my personal help with keeping them in the top AND the keyword ads, $1500 is cheap! And don't forget that I pay a 20% commission, (that's $300 for everyone reading this from Oklahoma), to any portal partner who sends me a customer who buys a domain! C'mon kids help me out here. I know you're probably not doing anything anyway :) and if I could sell just 7 more of these, the program I'll buy is going to help you out too.
Finally, I really hate to sell anymore of the 10 keyword ads for two years for $1000 because I know there will come a time very soon that I will cry over this deal. Naturally stuff like credit cards and e-commerce, the keywords that can really generate some good revenue for a search engine, are the ones that are getting taken first. Take a look at Goto.com and see what the top bids for those kind of keywords are.
I know that long before the two years are up, I'll be sitting there needing money again, of course, and have to tell some one that I can't take their $1000 a month for that keyword because I've already sold it for $4 a month. I'll be about as happy as a skinny hog at a 4H show. BUT, I said I would offer it until I raised the $20,000 I need and I will. Doesn't anybody need some keyword ads for stuff like electric shock treatments or hair removal or maybe adult diapers?? Those wouldn't sting so bad.
BARKING DOGS
Well, the dogs are barking, the wife is pouting and my dinner is gettin' cold so let me close with just saying that I honestly hope that what I am doing here with the PPP is helping at least somebody. The idea is to show you how I see things so that maybe you can see some things that may apply to you and your portal business. Money makes the world go 'round and most of the net-heads I know are working for about $1.50 an hour if they figure in their time, and that's the lucky ones. I want to see that change for my portal partners and myself. That's why I'm so excited about the Strategic Planning forum. I hope by next week I can start sharing some things with all of you that start to really make a difference in your money, your business and your life!
SEE YOU AT THE TOP

PORTAL PARTNER PRESS April 2000

========April 6, 2000========

Another day, another dollar --- out of petty cash : ) Another pretty good week. Wow, that makes like four in a row. The big step forward this week has been getting the affiliate program off the ground. I think, (since yesterday), we have it lined out and working properly. We've had right at 30 partners sign up and we've already had five sales from affiliates. Congratulations #3, #12 and #22. Good job kids!
I'll list the affiliate sign up link at the bottom of the Portal Partner Press along with all the other pertinent info. Anyway, on with the show.
MY WEEKLY PORTAL DIARY
Well, this week has been lawyer week. About a month ago I had some legal questions I wanted to speak with an attorney about. The legal internet talent pool in Oklahoma is a little shallow so I asked a client of Magic-city's, who is a local attorney, if he could recommend someone. I told him about Searchking as it was Searchking business I had the questions about. He called me back a few days later and told me he had set an appointment with a local law firm. Of course it was just about the most expensive firm in town. What a co inky dink huh? To my surprise, he offered to attend the meeting with me at no charge, which made me start thinking about what exactly his agenda was.
My meeting was Tuesday and after meeting with my the first lawyer who had offered to "help me out", who happened to have offices in the same hi-rise, we rode the elevator to the 22nd floor. We opened the 12 ft. oak doors and entered the reception area furnished in some type of French antiques. A timid looking man came out after our presence was announced via intercom, and introduced himself as this firm's IP, (intellectual property), specialist. I was a little impressed that any Oklahoman law firm even had an IP department.
This lawyer walked us to a conference room and seated us a 20 ft solid cherry conference table that I figured cost more than I made the last three or four years. He then started telling me about how much I needed some contracts concerning IP in a lot of the aspects of Searchking. (I was wondering how he knew so much about what Searchking was doing when I had never hired these guys and I had never expressed any concern over intellectual property with anyone). He mentioned how a lot of internet business is being conducted among programmers and site owners kinda like cowboys in the old west with no marshal in town and how this was a big mistake. He was adamant about how having an attorney to write contracts and agreements was crucial. Pretty much what you'd expect an attorney to say.
Then another lawyer came in and introduced himself. Without hesitation, he said he had looked at Searchking last night and it looked good. A subtle round of wink-wink, nudge-nudge seemed to sweep around the room between all three attorneys. Without me ever asking a question, he launched into a presentation about venture capital. At this point I had not asked a single question, they just assumed I was there to find out about getting VC. Actually, I was there to ask one lawyer one specific question.
I have a person that has offered to buy stock in Searchking and my question was what the process for selling stock privately without going public was. I wanted to know what kind of contract was needed and what it would cost to have this contract drawn up. Which, by the way, I left the meeting without ever getting an answer to that question.
Lawyer #3 told me he had contacted his brother who works for some investment firm in Austin TX the night before and had a deal ready to go to get our first round of funding of approx. $350,000 to $500,000. He implied that it would take no more than a phone call to make the ball start rolling. I got the impression that it was never a question of IF we could get the funding or not, it was only a question of when I wanted to do it.
I am basically flabbergasted that all of this was happening without ever hiring anyone here. How did they know so much so fast about me and my business. I decided my best approach at this time was to just keep my mouth shut and let them assume I was totally ignorant as opposed to speaking and removing all doubt. Not to mention, I found this whole conversation fascinating because I have spent many hours over the last few months checking out websites and reading books trying to learn how the whole going public thing happens and to be honest, have not gotten much farther at understanding it than I did before I started. So, this guy had my full attention.
The lawyer went on to explain that, typically, on our first round of funding, I should expect to give up about 40% of my stock. On the second round of funding we would go after about $1,500,000 and I should expect to have to give up another 30%. Then on our third round I'd be looking at giving up another 10% for about $3,000,000 and then we would take it to investment bankers and they would be the ones to take it public and of course that would be when money would flow like water. Of course, those percentages come out to 80% and since I only own 80% that would leave me with nothing. What surprised me was that they seemed to know so much about Searchking yet they didn't seem to know that 20% of the stock is unavailable.
He told me that with the first round the more important thing than money was that this "angel" would set up a management team consisting probably of a CEO, (chief operating officer), and a CFO, (chief financial officer). The money provided would not be as important as the expertise that would be brought to the table. This I would agree with. I don't know how to do all that stuff by myself and without those two key people, going public is a long shot to say the least. He also told me at that time to remember that 5% of a publicly traded company is probably going to be worth a lot more than 100% of a company that is not. (This part I'm not sure I agree with).
Basically, the whole time, I felt I was wading neck deep in a shallow pool with some very hungry sharks. That is not to say I don't think these men knew what they were talking about, I definitely do, I just felt that there was a lot of wink-wink, nudge-nudge going on in the room and there had already been a little strategy meeting that had not involved me. This is not necessarily a bad thing. My gut feeling is that these men are extremely capable lawyers who feel a little left out that Silicon Valley lawyers are making billions while they are not. I got the impression that they would LOVE to find an Oklahoma company that they felt could do the same for them that so many companies in California have done for those Silicon Valley lawyers. Actually, I was a little flattered that they saw my little search engine as a potential candidate for that purpose.
The meeting lasted about an hour and a half, (which I'm sure I'm going to be billed for at the tune of about $400). I've condensed the whole conversation here to hilight the "meat" of the meeting. Remember, I'm only telling you all of this because as I've said before, I fully expect some of you portal partners to be walking down the same road I am now at some point in the future. For those partners, I thought this little experience would be good for my Weekly Portal Diary, so that when you are sitting at that 20 ft cherry table maybe you'll remember something I said that may benefit you and make the whole thing a little less intimidating.
Good Luck!
YOU'VE GOT MAIL
Well, everybody but us it seems. I'm having a heck of a time getting the mail installed on the new server and getting it to work right. As I've said before, the mail is about the most challenging aspect of this whole project. It just takes a lot of coding to make a web-based e-mail program work. I've got people working on it and we will get there very soon, I promise.
I honestly think that as soon as I can get this on your portals, you're really going to love it. It has a lot of features that should prove to be invaluable to you. I know it's frustrating having to wait, but you definitely want me going through the hassles of getting it set up as opposed to you having to do it yourself.
TO BID OR NOT TO BID
Remember the keyword text banner ads on Searchking that I spoke about a couple of weeks ago? Well, while bidding may be the best way to capitalize on a program that will place your text ad at the top of a keyword search result, it is not going to work like I wanted it to. We are going to do away with the bidding aspect for now and simply devise a price schedule based on categories. Curt is working on the page now with the pricing and we should have it up within about a week or so.
In the meantime, I am offering all the portal partners the top spot out of four available for $10 per month. We are still small and until the price page goes up, this offer is available on a first come - first served basis. Any keyword, the top spot for $10 per month until the price page is put up. If you ever wanted to advertise for about 30 cents a day here's a good chance to do it. I will not cheat you and even after a year or so from now and we're doing a million page views a day, I will still let you keep that top spot for just the $10 per month as long as you're paying it. Are you a gambling kinda person? What would web design being the first thing anyone sees be worth if Searchking was getting that kind of traffic? How about promotion? web hosting? Not to mention adult stuff, (yuck!) Anyway, if you don't mind throwing a few bucks Searchking's way and maybe making a few bucks yourself, contact Holly Nelson at ecomm@acninc.net give her a 10 word title, a 25 word description and a url to link to, oh yeah and credit card stuff and you got it!
If you haven't seen this keyword text banner ad thing at work yet just go to www.searchking.com and do a search for log homes. See that little red dollar sign next to the first listing? That is what it is.
HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU
Well, as always, I've enjoyed writing this weeks issue of the PPP. I hope you enjoy reading it as well. Or at least I hope it doesn't make you mad. If it does, just let us know and we'll make sure you're not subjected to this torture again next week.
Don't forget to sign up as an affiliate. I want to see you kids making some money. Portals are getting to be a hot topic and it's just starting. ========April 13, 2000========

Hi Kids. Spring is just around the corner and I'm excited. I'm the original internet hillbilly, (in fact I own www.internethillbilly.com). I live about 15 miles from the nearest town and I enjoy looking out my office window this time of year. Everything is starting to turn green and come alive. I hope all of you get a chance to enjoy the great outdoors at least every now and then. Nature really is amazing.
MY WEEKLY PORTAL DIARY
I've had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life this week regarding running my portal, Searchking. Ever since the hard drive crash back in January, Searchking has simply been a disaster. Virtually none of the custom features were working. I have been plagued with nothing but ihtml errors, 404's and mis-directed pages.
My philosophy on running a search service has always been that you are better off to have one feature that works right, than a million really cool features that don't. Well, I have always felt that SK had a lot of really great features, especially for webmasters, but since losing over 80% of my data with the crash, I have not been successful at all in getting those features restored.
The programming team that was responsible for building and maintaining SK are not actually employees of mine. I simply contract them to do the work. I have worked with them on a daily basis for going on three months now and have just not made much progress. No matter what I've tried, I just can't seem to get "it" done.
I started SK over two and half years ago and I have spent literally 10's of thousands of dollars over that period of time and to have to face the possibility of admitting failure at this point was very difficult. I came to the decision that what I was fighting so hard for, doesn't actually even exist any longer. Without someone being able to add a site or edit their site or even vote on a site, in my opinion, Searchking was already gone.
This hit me petty hard because in spite of all the problems I've been faced with since starting the portal project, Searchking is looking like it will actually break even this month. Black ink for the first time in over 2 years! So, throwing in the towel was not an option. So what were my options?
Continuing working with the programmers I had was not an option because that is the one I had been taking for the last three months and the time had come to find another solution. Oracle, who I've been in talks with for over two months, is not an option at this particular time either. While I am extremely confident that Oracle could very well make everything work the way I want, I'm looking at a price tag of about $80,000 to $100,000 which is simply way beyond my grasp as of today. Hyperseek is another option, and the one that I am going to take.
I know the hyperseek engine. I know it's stable, fast, effective and feature rich. All that had to be done was download the SK database into a file and then upload it to the hyperseek engine. Fast, cheap and easy. It works for all of you, and I know it will work for me as well. In fact, I intend to use this engine in a lot of ways that maybe some of you hadn't thought of yet and be able to provide you guys with some options that you may not be aware of. Searchking will definitely put it through it's paces and push it to it's limits.
While I'm disappointed to have to shelve SK for the time being, I'm excited about having SK simply work again. It will actually improve the spam problems I've been plagued with for the last two years. Reviewing submissions is fast and easy and now we will be able to stop a lot of spam problems at the submission level. The biggest thing is that webmasters and searchers will not be getting errors when searching or submitting. In my opinion, the key to becoming successful with any search service is #1, returning relevant results to a search query and #2 having the engine work the way people think it should work. The thing that has been holding our traffic back is that when people see a link that says click here and then it doesn't take them where they expected to go or they get an error message, they ain't coming back. So for months now, we've seen our traffic go up one week only to drop the next. In fact, this month, we are on track to do worse traffic wise than we did last month. I honestly believe that will change dramatically once we get the hyperseek engine installed and you go where you think you're going to go and it works like you think it's going to work.
Anyway, I'll keep you posted.
AUTO SUBMIT PROGRAMS
I got an e-mail this week from one of our partners telling me they had been contacted by a company that sells auto submission software asking them if they could add their portal to their list of engines they submit to. She told me that she saw this as one way to get her directory built up really fast as the company told here that they could be adding as many as 5,000 sites per day, and then asked me what I thought of this strategy.
It's true that almost any auto submit software, (even the small obscure ones), can send you a LOT of sites fast, the problem is that you don't want the vast majority of them. My experience has been that out of 5,000 sites added from this type of software, very rarely were there 50 that were worth allowing into my database. I would venture to say that 90% of my problems with spam, came from allowing these types of submissions.
Now I'm sure there will be some of you thinking, it can't be all that bad. My response is HAH! That is exactly what I thought when I first went this disastrous route. I was wrong. It can be all that bad and it is! The key to success with any topic specific search service is in being able to control the results so that they can become a valuable enough asset to people interested in your topic to justify them taking the time of bookmarking your site and using it as a tool over and over again. You don't do that by allowing thousands of sites a day to use your resources with little or no regard to your business. You do it by knowing that you have spent the time and effort to provide a quality resource. Remember the internet golden rule. The more you give, the more you get.
WELCOME HOME KIDS
Remember the free portals I was offering to kids and seniors a few weeks back? Well, we got two kids to sign up. I'm thrilled and wish them the best of luck. I'm sorry no one went and got their Mom or Dad in but I'm really tickled about some Mom and Dad getting involved with this internet thing with their kids. I only see this as a positive thing and I'm very glad to see Searchking being a part of that.
Thank you.
KEYWORD TEXT BANNER ADS
I want to thank all of you who took me up on the $10 text banner ads. You guys grabbed some pretty good keywords! Curt couldn't believe I made a deal like that but it's just that if anyone is going to benefit from this program, I want it to be my partners.
His question was how I'm going to handle the situation of someone offering more than the $10. The answer is simply that I made a deal and I will keep it. That script will run a total of four ads for every keyword, so if someone offers to pay more, they simply get the #2, 3 or 4 spot on a first come first served basis because that top spot is already sold.
We will set up a price page with prices broken down by category. The top spot will be, (only an example here), $25, the 2nd $20, the 3rd, $15 and the 4th $10. So, for all of you who have the top spot for $10, that just means that all that is available will be the 2nd, 3rd and 4th spots at the regular price. Not that complicated.
Remember this offer is good until we get the price page online, (which I thought was going to be by now), which should be any day now. Until it is up, we are still accepting portal partner keyword text banner ads for $10 per month for the top spot. If you have a hot keyword you want, remember, we must have a 10 word title, a 25 word description and a url to send the traffic to and send it to Holly at ecomm@acninc.net
Here's a few more ads that you can check out.
• hotels
• cars
• cruises
• debt consolidation
• small business
• home business

========April 20, 2000========

Hello kids. I'm a little sad today. Not my usual cheery self. As some of you probably know, yesterday was the 5th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing and we dedicated the new memorial. President Clinton attended as well as a lot of press. It is naturally, a pretty big deal around these parts.
I'm 45 years old and have seen as much tragedy as anyone else. I've had to attend the funerals of loved ones. I've witnessed horrible car accidents and seen the news stories of terrible things happening to good people, but for some reason, the bombing has affected me a lot differently. To this day, 5 years later, I find myself still getting very emotional at the very thought of all those children who were lost. All the mothers and fathers, brothers, sisters and grandmothers and grandfathers who were so innocently and tragically lost.
I'm not saying I'm not affected by any other tragedy, it's just that if you were to mention my father's funeral at just about the same time as the bombing, it has very little effect on me at all, while watching the dedication of the memorial yesterday, it was all I could do to keep my composure. It's strange.
God Bless America.
MY WEEKLY PORTAL DIARY
Fairly uneventful week. (Thank goodness for small blessings). Most of this week has been consumed by installing all the necessary modules on the Raid server so we can get everything moved. Of course we have been slowed a little by my decision to move Searchking onto hyperseek which requires us to upload over 500,000 urls into the database. We found so many dupes and just plain trash that we decided to go ahead and take the time to clean it up as best we could instead of just repeating our mistakes of the past.
In spite of the fact that we now have a lot of tedious work to do, everything is moving along pretty good. We are continuing to grow and it appears that more and more people are getting the hang of this thing and building some really great sites.
LET'S MAKE A DEAL
Last week I mentioned that I would like to hear from our partners with any success stories or just about any information that any of you felt had merit to the other partners. I got an offer from one partner that I thought was pretty cool so I will publish it here. Mainly to see if he gets any takers. If he does, I see a new use for the Portal Partner Press that may benefit more partners. Here is the offer.
THE PPP IS FOR ALL OF US
The last thing I wanted to mention this week is that I want to make sure that you all realize this is your Portal Partner Press. If any of you have any kind of articles or stories that you wish to share with the other portal partners, please feel free to send them to me and I will be happy to include them. I especially love success stories and unique ways of solving problems.
You might want to tell all the partners this:
I am looking to network with them. For any portal partner, I will offer the following:
I will give them ongoing coaching on making money on the internet
I will get them a FREE merchant credit card account
I will give them a private url where they can read and download hundreds of reports and programs about marketing on line.
In return - all I ask is that they network with me and also give me some help on setting up my own portal, if possible.
Thanx
Greets to all
Shlomoh - portal partner
Have folks contact me at shlomoh@kingsolomon.com

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I have spoken personally with Shlomoh on several occasions and it is my personal opinion that he could probably do a lot for you.
PASS THE AMMUNITION
I didn't get anything else really I could publish because not everyone wanted me giving away their ideas, but I did get the permission of a couple of our partners to pass information on to you without giving you their specific url. I thought this was great because I think some of you folks have really incredible ideas and I think it is very cool that you would be willing to share some of those. Please, keep 'em coming!
The first idea I want to pass along to you came from a phone conversation and I was very impressed with the idea. This lady has a portal about something totally unrelated to this idea and just wanted my opinion. She lives in a town of about 13,000 but doesn't want to devote the time she feels it would take to build a quality local portal, so she wants to get a little more specific.
She also has one other thing that she sees as an asset. A 16 year old son who is popular and has lots of friends. Her idea came from the fact that she wants to find something that her son can do for gainful employment and in a smaller town there are limited opportunities. I believe her idea could make her a lot of money and help get her kid through college in just a few short years.
What she wants to do is, start hometownfastfood.com She wants to set up an internet delivery service. Basically, she will supply the drivers at a fee of say $2 per delivery. She will then sign up fast food restaurants in her area such as Taco Bell, KFC, Wendy's and any other food place that can afford her by charging them a set up fee and maintenance fee for designing and hosting their web site. She said she would start by hitting the big boys and work her way down.
She then would have flyers printed with her web site on a menu and have all the restaurants put them in each bag as the orders go out. I thought this was a really good idea. My guess is, if she can get Wendy's to put a flyer in every drive thru bag that says something like:
ANNOUNCING WENDY'S INTERNET DELIVERY SERVICE
delivery at the speed of the internet
http://www.hometownfastfood.com
With a menu on it, he'll start getting orders that night.
Of course there are some pretty important details to work out such as insurance for the drivers, payroll taxes and of course software issues, but all in all I thought it was brilliant! I believe there are a lot of people who have spent a thousand dollars on a computer and another $20 a month or so and would love to find a way to justify that expense. I have also thought from the very beginning of this whole portal thing that there should be some way a mom could simply go to the net and order a pizza.
Speaking of the software issues, one of the things I brought up was having to have a shopping cart. She showed me pretty quick how smart I was. She said why? All I need to do is put their menu and delivery area on a website on my portal and have it send a copy of the email order to the restaurant, to the driver and to me. I could do all that with nothing more than a secure order form and a laptop. After I thought about it, I think she's right. This is more of a hi-touch deal as opposed to hi-tech.
MORE AMMO
Another great idea came from another partner. He lives in a suburb of a major metropolitan area. He wants to put up a jr. and sr. high school sports site listing game times, athlete stats, histories, bios, etc about all the local schools' sports teams. Now this idea is not all together new, Mike Rotter has something very similar on his reddingcal.com site, but this guy did have some twists that I thought were really great!
He plans to get students from the English departments to provide content. Students from the audio/visual department to provide photos and videos. What school is not going to have students that want to be journalists someday? What school is not going to have students who want to be involved with their own school and be involved in the internet? Brilliant!
So, how does this make him money? Well, by selling sponsorships. How many ads do you see on every school sporting event? What business in the community is not going to want to sponsor their local school team? Again, he plans on making at least a large part of his money from designing and hosting websites for the businesses that don't already have websites and then charging for preferred placement on various places within his portal including the search engine.
Netcommr posted some very good advice in the forums this last week about making your portal very specific as a way to success. Personally, I couldn't agree more and then when I start hearing some of these killer ideas from some of our partners, it gets me excited. It makes me hungry too. I want more of these ideas. I want more interaction between partners. I want to see the internet delivery lady work with the local sports guy to build a portal that doesn't compete with each other and helps them both make a good living and provide quality content for their communities. Interacting and working together is the real power of a community of portal owners. The more we all take advantage of it, the more success we will all see. Come on, get involved, post in the forums, publish your ideas and deals in the PPP and let's all start being all we can be!
We are all sitting on such a golden opportunity here and I want to see us take advantage of it. We are building the world's first community of portal sites. WOW, folks whether you realize it or not, that is POWER. Let's use the most valuable resource we all have and that is each other. Send me some more, call me, send it USPS, send it by carrier pigeon, send it by covered wagon, just send it now!
CLOSING
That's all for this week kids. have a good Easter.
Love y'all

========April 27, 2000========

Howdeee! Great week this week. Spring has sprung. Everything is green and blooming. Mom and Kat are both into flowers and I'm grateful. If I were single my guess is my living room decor would consist of a recliner, an ashtray, a big screen TV and maybe a lamp. Yard work. Yikes! If I weren't married, my best bet for a decent looking yard would be to live in a defunct doctor's office or something with nothing but a parking lot. I do appreciate the woman's touch around T-1, (the name we gave our little 5 acre internet kingdom), it really looks pretty good. Except of course for parts I'm responsible for like the lawn mowing.
I was supposed to mow the lawn last weekend and it rained for about 20 minutes on Saturday morning, (thank God), so naturally, that gave me the excuse to blow it off until this weekend. So, now walking from the house to the office, (about 50 yards), is more like launching an assault in the jungles of Vietnam. It's just that you're fighting off bugs, lizards, raccoons, skunks and several other varieties of insects and mammals indigenous to the central Oklahoma landscape as opposed to just fighting off an opposing army of soldiers. It doesn't require as much artillery but I'm pretty sure the risk of becoming a casualty is just about as great.
Anyhoo.
MY WEEKLY PORTAL OWNER'S DIARY
We've made a lot of progress this week. We have gotten the SK database over 50% uploaded to the new hyperseek program and should be able to go live with that by the end of next week.
We've also started moving the magic-city.net domains to the new raid server. We'll be finished with all of those within less than a week. Once we have those domains moved we will start moving the portals. One of the reasons we did it this way is to give us a chance to get familiar with the process so that we will have it down to a science when we start moving the portals. We've also started making arrangements with our host to double our ram to a full gig. This will keep all the portals running at top speed and once we get the portals off of cosmo, Searchking will be back to top speed.
Shane will also start installing the e-mail program onto the raid server by the end of next week so that it will be ready as soon as we get the portals moved. Whew! It's very nice to see things running pretty much on schedule for a change.
LET'S MAKE A DEAL
Last week I mentioned that I would like to hear from our partners with any success stories or just about any information that any of you felt had merit to the other partners.
Here's is her first contribution.
ATTRACTING ADVERTISERS FOR YOUR SITE, Part One
So you have a web site and your building traffic, and hopefully you're showing a profit from your own product sales and/or through affiliate programs. Now it's time to look at attracting advertisers who will pay you to run their banners and/or text links on your site (and in your ezine or newsletter, if you have one.)
KNOW YOUR VISITORS
The first step is to compile demographic information on your site's visitors. This is extremely important information for any potential advertiser, and is important for you in targeting potential advertisers.
There are two simple ways of collecting demographic data on your visitors. You can run a daily or weekly poll, or you can collect this information through the subscription process if you have a newsletter or ezine. For example, Listbot allows you to ask demographic information of those subscribing to your ezine or newsletter. Otherwise, simply polling your visitors works too.
Don't try and collect too much information, as most people are unwilling to spend the time to fill out a long form or survey, and may be quite hesitant to give too much information. Just concentrate on the basics:
Country
Gender
Age
Home Ownership
Education
Marital Status
Children in Household
Income
This information will be enough to give potential advertisers a good sense of who visits your site. Keep a log of information in Excel for future reference, and as your traffic and your site grows, do another poll or contest to gather the "new" stats. You can then sort the information by category in many different ways to suit your advertisers questions.
This can be a good means of understanding how to market to your actual market rather than the one you may have thought would be your visitors. Some times you can be surprised at the results, and find that you need to make some strategic changes to the content and direction of your site, because of the results that you gather.
Either way, this is basic information for inside and outside marketing.
Next Press: KNOW YOUR TRAFFIC

If you would like to learn more about MARKETING from the 'guru' on staff, Holly Nelson, please email her at ecomm@acninc.net to be placed on the 5 Minute Marketing Mailing List.
TRY IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT
I've discussed with you all before my concern that we're not signing up enough portal pluses and pros to satisfy me. Especially when we compare it to the number of sign ups for the power portals, which is nothing more than a free webpage with a forum. The power portal is not going to give you access to your own database which I feel is the MOST important part of running a real portal site.
I feel that we should be signing up hundreds a week and we're only signing up hundreds of free portals. I don't mind the fact that we are getting hundreds of free ones a week, it's just that the power portal has nowhere near the features that the pluses and pros do. I think my biggest challenge is that most people don't know what it is the portal program can do.
Educating the public is always difficult and expensive, but people realizing the power and potential of the hyperseek program is my best chance of getting a lot of top quality topic-specific portal sites as partners. I realize that $29 is a ridiculously small amount of money for a program like what we offer, but I can't expect people to just know that. I need to find a way that they can see it for themselves.
My solution, at least for now, is TRY IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT. We already do offer a complete money back guarantee. If anyone is not happy with the program for any reason, all they have to do is notify us within 30 days and we will give a 100% refund. No questions asked. That is not the same thing as free for 30 days.
Over the next few days, I'm going to change the text at searchkingportal4u to make sure that it is easily understood that you can sign up for a portal plus or pro and it is free for 30 days. We will not charge anyone a dime until 30 days after they get their ftp access. Of course if they do not notify us within 30 days, we will assume that they are happy with the program and we will then charge them. The idea is that if I can just get people set up and let them use the program for 30 days, get them into the forums and see what the potential of this program is, that many more people will start taking advantage of at least the portal pluses as opposed to the power portal.
I'm hoping that this will give a nice shot in the arm to all the affiliates. This should give us all the opportunity to increase sales by really pushing the try it before you buy it. We will start working on some new banners for all the affiliates to use and I also encourage any and all of you to submit your own banners that you think could be effective. Please send any banner you have to Mike Rotter at webmaster@searchking.com and he'll put 'em up on the affiliate page.
So, will the try it before you buy it work? I don't know. I only know that I don't see any way I could be more up front or fair about the whole thing. I had thought at one point that I could develop screen shots of the program so that before you signed up you could see the admin page. The problem is that seeing it and using it aren't the same thing and I can't let the general public just go in with access to it. Can you imagine how much time Shane would have to spend just going in and resetting the permissions???
This way, I'm taking all the risks. I can understand how people on the net have a hard time trusting someone. I also see how I don't know who I can trust either. This way, I'll take the chance the person is being honest with me and they really want a portal site for themselves. If they cancel, I'm out the expense of the set up but I honestly believe that anyone who sees the program will have to agree that it's worth far more than the money we charge and I'm willing to take that risk. Besides, if someone really does not think that they can figure it out, then there is no point in just having it sit there anyway. The way I see it, it's well worth the risk even if we only get a few more quality portals.
By the way, I got this idea from the forums. As I've said so many times before, if you're serious about you're portal, get involved in the forums. I need your input and you'll be amazed at what valuable help you can get for yourself.
SPEAKING OF VALUABLE HELP
Last week I discussed some ideas that had come to me from portal partners. Keep 'em coming! I won't go into as much detail as last week but I will mention that I had a person with an idea for a recipe portal and an arts and crafts supply portal. To my surprise, we don't have a portal for either of these subjects. I really liked the arts and crafts supply thing. Her idea was not to sell arts and crafts, but to sell the stuff you make arts and crafts with. I've enjoyed a few of the arts and crafts shows out of the hundreds that my wife has dragged me to over the years, and I always wondered where people get all those old mailboxes, fireplace mantels and antique hair for antique reproduction dolls. For all those sticks with ribbons on them, somebody had to get the sticks from somewhere.
Then I got what I thought was the most unique idea for a portal I've heard of yet. This man collects WWI and WWII photos and memorabilia. He wants to set up a portal to sell the photos. What he does is take photos of certain events that's he's collected, (for example, he has a photo of some Japanese big wig signing the surrender on some big boat while sitting next to some American hotshot, ((impressed with my deep knowledge of American history yet?)). He sells them for like $10 and I asked how do you make money selling a picture like that for $10. I felt a little stupid when he said I sell the copies. OOOHHH Copies, now I get it. Well, the reason for the portal is not just to sell inventory but to build inventory. He buys your old photos and says there is nowhere on the net to go if you wanted to buy or sell or trade old war photos and stuff. Good idea! I hope to see it up and running soon.
Anyone else have a killer idea they want to share?? Send them to me at bobking@searchking.com
YOUR'E NOT GOING OUT TO PLAY WITH ANYBODY UNTIL YOU GET IN THERE AND FINISH YOUR HOMEWORK!
Love y'all

PORTAL PARTNER PRESS March 2000

========March 8, 2000========

Let me start off this week with an apology to each and everyone of you. Last week I did a very stupid thing and I've paid dearly for it and I am really sorry. When I sent the PPP out I put everyone's e-mail address into the CC instead of the BCC. Therefore, everyone could see everyone else's e-mail address. Well, I certainly can't promise to not make another mistake, but I can promise I won't make that one again.
Here's one friendly little reminder I got from one of our ex-partners:

How dare you send my email address to everyone on your list. You lost my respect because you have no respect for my privacy. Take me off, as I have requested before. Do not send to me any more and for heaven's sake stop prattling on.

I especially got a kick out of the prattling on part. Remember kids, I'm new at this newsletter thing. Please give me a break. I'm doing the best I can.
I also got a few responses to my little rant on spamming. Surprisingly, none of them that bad. I was expecting to get slammed pretty hard as I was afraid I may have stepped on some toes, but this is really the only one and actually agreeing with me.

I am not sure what the harangue against spamming really was all about. Any entrepreneur who uses a web tool, especially if he pays for it, wants to get maximum exposure and make money. Why else get a tool if not to use it to the maximum. We all would like to see people be nice but I would also like to see people make money. Regarding the kid who shot and killed the little girl. That kid is only 6 years old and already he is a little monster. A six year old is old enough to know that you don't shoot someone. When I was 6 there was no television and even I knew not to shoot anyone. That six year old should be executed now before he grows up and becomes a menace to society. Truth be told, he is already one. His killing of the little girl is his responsibility. Its no one else's fault; not his parents, not society, not spammers, not capitalists, only his, and he should be made to answer for it, not slapped on the wrists the way this world loves to do. I said my constitutional piece.

I love it when people see things differently than I and have the courage of conviction to speak up. There is nothing wrong with having an opposing point of view.
I got many, many more e-mails like the one below.

Hello,
Stick to your morals, it is such a good thing.

I would have stuck to my morals no matter what, but it is certainly gratifying to me to know that I am not the only one getting just a little tired of all the crap we are all subjected to just because we are on the net.
I truly enjoy hearing from all of you and please know that your comments are always welcome.
ON TO NEW BUSINESS
This is the first week in the last six or so that I have actually felt like I've made forward progress. First of all, we got the Searchking database working again. This means that now all the power portals can let people search without losing their hits. Every time anyone searches from a power portal, it opens a new window as opposed to just sending them to SK.
BANNER ROTATIONS WORKING -- TRY IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT
Also, we have the banner admin program working again. We can now rotate buttons and banners throughout the site. To my knowledge, Searchking is the very first search service in the history of the net to offer a "try it before you buy it" advertising program. You can buy a million dollars worth of banner ads and we will run them for one month before we charge one dime. The idea is that we want our advertisers to be able to determine for themselves just what the value of the ads are.
I know this sounds crazy, but it's not as crazy as you'd think. The one thing I have right now is inventory and a lot of it. The one thing I need is advertisers. Well, if only 10% of the try it before you buy people could justify the expense, that is more money than I'm making now. Even if no one could justify the expense, I could at least offer some advertising to people that may need it, (every little bit helps you know), and that's not such a bad thing.
If any of you have any questions about advertising either on the portals or on Searchking, just ask Holly Nelson, our advertising manager. Her e-mail isecomm@acninc.net
E-MAIL IS FINALLY WORKING
Also, the e-mail is finally working again. WHEW! This one has been a bugger. This is going to be an incredible feature. We'll be installing it on all the portal pros first and then move to the portal pluses. Remember if you have a portal plus, you need to let us know that you want your own vanity e-mail. I'll be starting some threads in the forums about the e-mail because there are some issues that are going to have to be addressed as to how I am going to be able to pay for the resources consumed by hundreds and thousands of users. If 1000 sites have their own e-mail accounts and they each have 100 users and that is all free, I've got a problem with hardware, tech support and bandwidth. I'm counting on all of you that care about your portal to join us in the forums and help me figure this out. Remember that if you don't participate, you can't blame anyone but yourself if it doesn't go the way you wanted.
One thing I want to point out. The old program is up now but that is not the same thing as the new program. The main reason we put the old mail back up is so that people who were using the old mail could go and retrieve it. I urge you all to get all the data you want to keep out of your folders and address book. We are planning on archiving the data, but the way my luck has been going, it would be a good idea to get it while it's hot, (if you catch my drift).
RAID NET SERVER
We also got our replacement hard drive from buy.com Monday and the controller came in as well. They are installing all the pieces today and we should have the raid online by this Friday. That means the new and permanent chat program for everyone and the affiliate program. I believe I'll be chatting to affiliates by the end of next week.
DUKE, DUKE, DUKE, DUKE OF EARL
I started writing this issue about 2 pm this afternoon, but as usual, it's after 8 pm now. I get a lot of interruptions throughout the day as I'm sure most of you do as well. I had to stop at about 7 and eat my supper. As is the custom in my house, I usually watch TV while I eat.
Tonight I happened upon a public TV broadcast called "Doo Wop, the 50th Anniversary". I really hope some of you caught it too. It absolutely blew me away!
My very first record, (a 45 of course) was Come Go With Me by the Del Vikings. I used to listen to it over and over and over in the privacy of my room. (Even though I shared it with Phil my younger brother, it was stilled called my room. I was much bigger and could beat him up, which I did regularly for no apparent reason that I can recall). One of my most embarrassing moments was when I was caught by my mother and grandmother doing my little fantasy dance to this song. They had snuck down the hall and quietly opened my bedroom door for the sole purpose of catching me and then making sure the entire family knew just how silly I looked.
As I watched 4 of the original 5 members of the Del Vikings, all of whom had to be in their late 60's if not 70's, I found myself a little sad at the fact that obviously one of the 5 had passed. It made me realize just how long ago getting caught doing my silly dance actually was.
The performance was simply incredible! When they had finished the song the audience gave them a well deserved standing ovation. All of a sudden I realized that I had been sitting straight on the edge of my chair and was now applauding right along with the audience. I'm not really sure if what made it so great was the performance or all the childhood memories that came flooding back as I listened, but whatever it was, the same feeling had to have been going through the whole crowd.
Thinking to myself that it just doesn't get any better than that, the next artist was none other than "The Duke of Earl" himself. As his back up singers started doing the duke-duke-duke-duke of earl ditty on stage, he suddenly appeared at the back of the auditorium wearing a flawless tux complete with top hat, walking stick and red velvet lined cape. He looked absolutely fabulous and sounded twice as good. I was awe struck!
The thought occurred to me how lucky this man was to still possess a talent like he had and to be able to perform for an exceptionally appreciative crowd after 50 years. It must have been a real highlight of his life. Here's a man who did what he loved, did it very well and earned a reward for himself that no amount of money can buy. I was very proud of him.
My wife walked into the room and asked me "what's wrong, you look sad". I suddenly realized that I was so awe stricken that I had become a little emotional. I was so blown away by this man, the previous band and the TV show in general that I had tears in my eyes. I wasn't sad at all. I was just overcome by all the memories flooding over me and feeling how lucky I was to have had these people and these songs in my life.
My mother was only 15 when I was born so naturally, 50's Doo Wop was the first music I ever heard. It was the music of her generation and luckily, it was mine too. Of course the majority of my album collection later on consisted mostly of the Stones, the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, etc, but to this day it still amazes me how many of those songs I still know the words to.
I love music. I played professionally for close to 15 years. I listened to rock, played country and enjoyed just about all types of music. Even today, now that I've somehow turned into an old fuddy duddy and don't "get" most of the music I hear the younger generation play, I still think it's great that they do "get it", but you can take all of your techno rock alternative hip slump jive rap and stick 'em in your hat because Doo Wop -- Man, that's music.
I can't remember when I've enjoyed a TV show as much as I did tonight and it just makes me feel so grateful for all the incredible things my life has been blessed with. It's kind of a shame that TV has become so dominated by the all mighty dollar and that finding really great stuff on TV is hard, but, for all the complaining and whining I do about how the quality of TV is really dismal and how much I hate all those mind-numbing ads after ads, I still thank God for giving mankind the sense to invent something that can make me feel so good so easy as TV. I feel exactly the same way about the internet.
CLOSING
Well, while you all know how much I love to prattle on, I will shut up for now.
WE TRY SO HARD TO GIVE OUR KIDS WHAT WE DIDN'T HAVE THAT WE SOMETIMES FORGET TO GIVE THEM WHAT WE DID HAVE.
(a line from some stupid TV sitcom that I just happened to overhear while flipping through the channels)

========March 15, 2000========

Howdy partners. I hope this letter reaches you all in portal heaven today and not portal hell. I've been having a little of the latter myself this past week.
MY WEEKLY PORTAL DIARY
This week has been filled with more delays for me. The biggest thing bugging me has been the mail. We have it installed on one of our test portal pluses but we keep finding tiny little obstacles that we need to overcome and it's a little frustrating at times.
The problem I keep having is the same one for the mail and just about everything else I try to get done. I have a lot of very talented and highly qualified people on my team BUT, I'm learning that there are not very many people who can "do it all". It takes a team of people to accomplish the things that I feel need to be accomplished.
The problem is the old catch 22 circle. For example:
Me - "Shane, will you re-install the classifieds for me?"
Shane - sure but the webzone has to get the dns numbers set up first.
Me - Ok I'll call them.
Me - Webzone, will you get the dns numbers set up for classified.searchking.com please?
webzone - Sure but we have to wait until Sarge moves everything from spike to Cosmo.
Me - Ok I'll call Sarge.
Me - Sarge, will you move everything over to cosmo for me please?
Sarge - Sure but I have to wait for Grant to install a script.
Me - Grant, will you install that script so Sarge can move it to cosmo so webzone can set the dns numbers so Shane can install the classifieds?
Grant - Sure but I need to get the URL from Shane
Me- ok I'll call Shane
Me - Shane, Grant says he needs to get the url from you.
Shane - yes but you have to get that from the webzone
Here I go again.
Now this is just an example and is not identifying the actual conversation, so there's no need for anyone to e-mail me with an answer to this specific problem. I made it up for the sole purpose of trying to express the feelings of frustration that go along with trying to run multiple servers and working with multiple script jockeys. Anyone who comes along later and attempts to replicate my efforts may not experience this exact conversation, but I bet you'll experience the exact feelings.
My point is that when I started this little project, I way underestimated the level of organizational skills required. It is quite a trip. I'm getting better at it all the time but only because I'm determined. Some days, I would shoot somebody, but I have no idea of who to aim at.
Enough complaining. The good news is that we ARE making a lot of progress, it just takes a little time. Every time I speak to any sales people about any kind of program or script and they tell me it can be up and running in minutes, I always chuckle to myself now finding humor in the number of times I have fallen for that line. The cliche about how fast everything on the net is kind of a misconception. Yes, some stuff can be set up really fast and easy. The trick is in getting it to work with the system and features that you already have that slows things down a little. As I said before though, I really am very lucky to have the caliber of people behind me that I have. Each of them brings a lot to the table and it will get done. It's just my responsibility to figure out the process and use each of the resources available to me to their best advantage.
Let's move on.
POWER PORTALS
We have over 400 power portals now. My biggest question is why aren't they more active?
The power portals will always be the bulk of our partners and the contribution they can make to us all is extremely important. We need to get the power portals involved. These little "freebies" are going to generate a ton of traffic and it's important that SK and all it's partners give them all the support they need to make their sites successful.
We have a forum set up devoted to the power portals. We also have a very good moderator for this topic in David Galyon. Dave can do a lot to answer you questions about how best to use the power portal, for placement, for delivering content, to building traffic and to making a little money from it. This is a really great asset and you should be taking advantage of it.
Keep in mind that power portal partners have just as much say in the decisions that get made at SK as any other partner. I have always relied on the input of the people in the forums when it came to having to make policy decisions and I always will. If you've been to the forums, you know the level of support that can be given there. The vast majority of moderators and people posting there are committed to helping each other. If you would like to help a little too, DO IT! We need you. We need you talking about the power portal. I need to know are they working right? Are they doing what you expected? Is there something I can do to make them better? Is there something YOU can do to make them better?
I just keep thinking about how many people have web pages from Geocities or Angelfire, Free Yellow or about 100 others. The forums alone should add more value than those services. Anything you could do with a free web page, you can certainly do better with a free portal. So come on power partners, get involved. I can provide the tools but if you're serious about your site, you have to provide the effort.
Searchking has always had the philosophy that if you care about your site, I'll bend over backwards to help any way I can. That holds just as true for you as it does anyone else. Get into the forums and tell me what you're thinking. At the very least I would think you would have some questions about the affiliate program.
RAID SERVER UPDATE
Well, you know how last week I said they had told me the raid server would be up by Friday? Guess what! We had a problem. SURPRISE!
Actually, they did get it up on Friday just like they said they would, BUT, now we discover some kind of problem with the hard drive adapters. Order one overnight delivery on Friday so that we can be sure that is the problem. It gets delivered on Tuesday, (It seems I don't understand the concept of "overnight" delivery.) and it works! Order three more on Tuesday, (again overnight of course), supposed to be delivered today so the word now is that the server will be set up and running on Thursday.
I feel pretty confident that it really will happen this time, (is that the net gods I hear laughing at me?), because there isn't a whole lot left on the server that I could replace. Maybe a couple of buttons on the front or something. Anyway, the affiliate program is just waiting on the server, so again, for the third week in a row, we should have the affiliate program ready for sign-ups next week.
ONE LAST THING
I know that this program is a little more advanced than some of you care to deal with. This is a huge concern for me because I don't want anyone to miss out on the opportunities this program can provide because of a few challenges in the beginning. It is hard and there is no reason to feel bad or disappointed about having problems in the beginning. None of us were born knowing this stuff.
With that said, my problem is how to address this problem. My best solution so far has to been to enlist the aid of a few of our more experienced partners to offer their personal attention to getting you set up and running. Of course, these people are busy and not able to do it for you for free so, I've set up a system where you can get your portal running and get a little personal training for $100. That money will go to the staff that provides the work and not me.
If any of you are just stuck and can't seem to get over the hump, I hope you can see the value in being willing to pay for a little expertise. Just send me an e-mail at bobking@searchking.com and let me know you need help and I'll take care of it!
Well, I could go on, (as usual) but I'll save the really big news for next week.
Love y'all
See ya in the forums!

========March 23, 2000========

Howdy again partners. This is my fourth year marketing online and every year at this time I have noticed a decline in the numbers. I think it is simply a seasonal thing. As the weather starts to become a little nicer, people start spending a little more time outdoors, (some people. Not us of course), enjoying the first signs of spring. The only bad thing for me is that Searchking may not hit that 1 million page views this month as the numbers indicated at the beginning of the month. This is not that big of a deal as it still looks like we will hit the 700,000 or so range and that is just a heck of a lot of people.
Remember that the directory is there strictly for portal partners. While we have a long way to go before we can challenge Yahoo, 700,000 page views is nothing to sneeze at and you guys are increasing those numbers everyday. Why not take advantage of your hard work and let Searchking send you some of that traffic. The directory is small enough that there is no way you will not have great placement. Surely if there was any other service out there that you knew you would be on top, you'd be submitting to it. So why not get your site into the Searchking directory as well. It just makes sense.
MY WEEKLY PORTAL DIARY
This is the first week I have actually felt like I have made some real progress since the hard drive crash on January 23rd. We have the new mail installed. We got the affiliate program installed. We have the raid server operational and we finally got a new "top of the keyword results" text banner script running on the main Searchking search engine. I'll discuss each of these new developments in more detail a little later.
Most of this last two months, I have basically felt like I was involved in a strategic battle of wits and I was completely unarmed. Now I am finally seeing some results from all the pushing, whining, threatening and complaining I've done. It feels pretty good actually.
THE MAIL
We've been having some really great discussions in the forums about the new mail and being able to place it on your portal pluses and portal pros. We had a lot of helpful input and I think we have been able to use that input to make some decisions that should do the most to provide the most benefits to the most amount of our partners.
The mail is installed now and we just have to modify the MX records and it will be live. Everyone that wants a Searchking e-mail account will need to go and sign up for it. For everyone that already has an account, we will leave it up so that you can retrieve your last e-mails and move the info from your old folders to your new ones. The way it is supposed to work is that if you go to mail.searchking.com you will pull up your old account but if you go to www.searchking.com/mail you get the new one. I'll do my best to have it set up so that you can register from Searchking's front page for the new mail. If any one has a problem, please let me know so I can get it fixed.
Remember also that for your portals, if you want your own e-mail you need to let us know by sending an e-mail to bobking@searchking.com. We will only install it on the portal pluses and the portal pros that request it.
THE AFFILIATE PROGRAM
Ok, I've been getting a few test mails from the affiliate sign up page today so I know they have it installed and working. There seems to be a few minor procedural details I need to work out but it is up.
I've started a thread in the SK forum under the "announcement" topic and I posted a tentative terms agreement. The reason I did this is, again, to get input from our partners. I invite everyone to have a look and make any comments, suggestions, complaints or praises there in the forum. Remember, if you don't get involved, don't blame me if you don't get everything you wanted. I can only do the best I can and often I rely on your help to do better. Such is the case here.
You need to hurry though as I have every intention of starting to sign you kids up no later than the middle of next week.
One thing I want to point out in the PPP, (so that I'm not the only one with a copy of it), is that I want to make it VERY clear, that I am NOT an affiliate expert. This is my first dive into the affiliate pool. This will be in effect a beta test. I intend to deal with everyone as openly and honestly as I possibly can and I expect the same from all of you. If there is a problem, don't freak out. Contact me and give me the opportunity to take care of it the best I can. I can't promise everything is going to be perfect and just the way you want it. I can only promise to do the best I can.
TEXT BANNER AD SCRIPT
In my opinion, banner ads simply do not work for the vast majority of people. I think the net has been so flooded with them that most people have become desensitized to them and don't even notice them. Being in the search engine placement business for almost four years, one thing I know that does work is being in the top of a search services results for a keyword. That is highly targeted traffic.
Another thing that I know works is simply saying what you want to say. That does necessarily mean having flashy images or anything other than just an honest frontal attack worded the way you would want to say it.
Well for two years I've been trying to find a script I could use, (and afford), that would allow me to place paid text banners at the top of my results. I wanted to display them in such a way as to not be trying to mislead the public and let them know it was paid for and yet offer my advertisers much more bang for their buck. Well, I think we've done it.
Go to Searchking and do a search for cgi, ecommerce, online database, web page design, music, books, movies, videos, california, redding, search engine positioning, search engine placement, ranking, online game, multi-player game or games. You'll see a little red dollar sign in front of the paid result and the rest should be pretty self-explanatory.
The reason I mention this here is two fold. First, I think this is an incredibly useful tool for not just the portal partners but the entire internet and I'm trying to negotiate a deal with the programmer now to be able to offer this program to my partners both for use on their own portals and as an affiliate product as well. Secondly, I'm trying to chalk up a few sales.
The way this thing works is, there are only a total of 400 keywords available. The script will display up to four listings per keyword. Some of those words are going to end up being extremely valuable, (especially the adult stuff), and I have no idea of what the value is going to be. So, we will lease these keywords on a monthly basis for unlimited impressions based on bids. The minimum bid is $10 per month. On the last day of the month, we will take the highest bid and put them on top. The next highest placed next and so forth for the four listings.
The procedures are a little vague right now as I have a lot of questions regarding exactly how to handle the administration of this new program. So for the time being, I will have to run it by hand, (reminds me of an old joke). The reason I'm telling you all of this right now is that I don't have a single customer. Every keyword there is, is available for $10 per month. I would like to offer those keywords to my portal partners first because it may be weeks or even months before someone would bid your word up higher. Of course the more popular the keyword, the quicker someone else is going to want to beat you out of it but there should be a lot of keywords relevant to your business that you may keep for a long time for just the $10 per month.
If I've been able to "sell" anyone on this, contact Holly Nelson at ecomm@acninc.net as I don't even have an order form up yet. I know Holly is planning on being out of town for a while and I'm not exactly sure when and for how long, so if you can't get a reply from Holly right away, contact me at bobking@searchking.com and let me know and I'll take care of it for you.
POWER PORTALS
Last week, I begged and threatened to try to get our power partners involved in the forums. No luck! Still nothing. I'm not going to spend a lot of time trying to get all the power portal partners to realize the opportunities this program offers. You'd think getting a top listing in a search engine directory for a free site alone would be enough to get you to care about your site, but if you don't care about your site and only took it because it was free, then I or Searchking can't help you.
Searchking's motto has always been if you care about your site, we will go out of our way to help you and that is going to apply to this program as well. We welcome your input, we need it and we beg you to participate, but that decision is up to you.
CLOSING,
Finally, I know I mentioned last week to look for me announcing a Big Surprise. Well, I'm still working on it and am not ready to announce it yet. Sorry. Oh well, I guess you'll just have to keep reading the PPP.
Please participate in the forums folks. There will be a lot happening fast over the next few days and weeks and I want you all to be able to take advantage of the new stuff coming out as well as the help and support of all the old-timers. It really is a nice place to be and I need your help.
Love Y'all

========March 29, 2000========

Bob here. How're ya doin' this week? Great I hope. Well it looks like I was a little premature in bragging about hitting one million page views this month. I was just taking the average of the first few days of March and I forgot about the little seasonal decline in numbers around the middle to the end of March. Oops. Not too disappointed though, we will hit right at 700,000 page views this month so I'm counting on April being the month for confetti and champagne. As I said, we have a long way to go but 1,000,000 page views a month is nothing to sneeze at.
I made a post in the forums this past week about how much I can't wait for the day when many of you start hitting the numbers and actually find yourself in my shoes. The e-mails, the advertising questions, the tech questions, the scripts not working, the staff not being there, the phone lines going down, the paperwork getting lost, and on and on and on and on. It's a lot of work and I'm going to have a big kick when I get calls from you guys pulling your hair out and letting me get to say those immortal words, "I told you so".
Actually, that's the only reason I keep providing the weekly portal diary, in the hopes that when some of the problems that are confronting me now start confronting you then, you will know that there really is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and that all the work is worth it.
MY WEEKLY PORTAL DIARY.
Well, this week has been another pretty good one. Wow, two in a row! This week Sarge got all the edit your site stuff fixed and now Mike is working on getting all the links going to the right pages. Once we have that accomplished, the only thing left is the little feature that adds that award icon to the listings automatically and if that's going to be a big problem, then I have something else in mind. We should be back to normal operating procedures with Searchking in the next few days. Whew!
We also have the new mail installed on Searchking now and it seems to be working all right. We've already signed up close to 200 users and so far no complaining e-mails. This is one area where no news is good news. We all have a tendency on the net to take all this stuff for granted. We all surf sites and check e-mail and buy products with very little or no thought to what kind of effort goes on behind the scenes to make all that stuff work. But boy oh boy, let it NOT work and we're e-mailing somebody to let them know that their site is screwed up. Believe me, I'm the same way. So, with not getting any bad e-mails about the mail, (I still get plenty of other ones), that makes me think it's working all right.
Now, we're in the process of getting the program moved onto the raid server so that we can start installing it on your portals. Grant was doing this yesterday but with the server being brand new, it had the bare minimum of programs installed so Grant couldn't just move the entire mail program, he had to first install some modules which of course takes more time. It should be moved by the end of this week. Then I have to spend a little time with Mike and Shane changing some of the lay-out and then we're ready to start setting everyone up. We're hoping to have the first ones done by the time you read the next portal partner press.
The big step was getting the affiliate program installed.
THE AFFILIATE PROGRAM
It is online and ready to take sign ups. Remember this is for portal partners only. The url is www.searchkingportal4u.com/affiliate.htm
Like everything else we've had to do, it wasn't quite as easy as the website made it sound. However, we have gotten excellent support from the company we bought it from so the few bugs we thought we had, they helped us through. The problem right now is that I haven't had time to modify the welcome letter, (which some 16 or so of you already know). We're getting some banners ready now so that I can put the link to the banners url in the welcome letter. I'll send an e-mail to all the affiliates as soon as we have that done. Should be in the next day or two. so, if you sign up as an affiliate and the welcome letter doesn't sound quite right, not to worry. I'll be sending you an e-mail very soon.
One thing we are having fixed on the sign up form is that the place for the social security number does not say required. We are seeing that most of the sign ups aren't putting their ss# in. I wouldn't either. However, if you make over $600 in a year, we can't pay you unless we have your ss#. Searchking is responsible for notifying the IRS of any US resident who makes over $600. Since we are assuming that EVERYBODY is going to make more than that, we need those ss#'s. For those of you that have already signed up and didn't put in your number, please send it to the person who will be keeping track of your money. Yvonne Brownfield at yvonne@searchking.com
I'm also having Curt add another topic to the forums. Searchking Affiliates. This will give us a place to discuss the ins and outs of the program.
THE BIG SURPRISE
The big surprise that I promised two weeks ago is that I am going to give away some free portal pluses. As much as you've had to listen to me whine about money, I figured that would come as enough of a surprise to most of you that I could consider it a BIG surprise. So Bob, what's the deal?
The deal is this. I'm very proud of the community we're building here and I want to see it keep going in the direction that it is. What I like about our community is the feeling of family that has developed and I think that is very important. Well, a family needs grandmas and grandpas and it needs kids. I want more seniors and more kids involved with Searchking and I want them as our portal partners.
From now until April 30th, I will waive any fees for a portal plus up to a total of 10 for the first people that request it that are over the age of 60. I will do the same for anyone under the age of 16. Now the only place on the order form that they could put their age is in the comments section, so the only way they would know is if you tell them.
The idea is here is to try to get you involved with your own family as well as introduce them to the Searchking family. Call your Mom and tell her you'll help her with her genealogy site. Call your Dad and offer to help him get that WWII site he's been talking about doing. Spend a little time with your kids helping them put together a portal about their school, their sports team, their art class. Your kids will probably teach you a little something in the process.
I'll tell you what got this whole thing going in my head. As most of you know, my mother works for me as Searchking's lowest paid employee. She started out just doing some filing because she only wanted to work three days a week to supplement her so-called social security, (speaking of which I just can't believe that anyone, even the government, could expect anyone to live off of that). Well in less than two months she has become involved. She took over the affiliate program and has virtually set it up on her own. She is now doing most of the daily work sheet, she handles a lot of my calls, she runs the charges and she reads the forums. She has been bitten by the bug.
For the first time in 20 years, my Mom is like her old self. She is an incredibly intelligent woman with over 25 years experience in the banking business as a supervisor of the loan department, overseeing about 12 billion dollars in loans for the Bank Of Oklahoma. She has almost single handedly raised 4 kids. She has a great sense of humor, an inner strength that I totally envy and a unique way of gaining the respect of everyone she comes into contact with. She is beautiful, smart, witty and I am very proud. She has a lot to offer this world and I bet someone close to you does too.
The other day, while we were sitting outside, out of the blue she said, "you know I've been reading your forums and I would love to do one of those portals for my genealogy". This is how I found out that she had been reading the forums and I don't know why for sure, but I was surprised. She said, "I just don't think I could get it going and I don't understand how all those people got so smart". She went on to ask, "how did you ever learn to do all that stuff?" "You've really been working a lot at this thing and have really turned it into something big". She then reached up and gently brushed my hair back from my forehead. It was her way of saying she was proud of me.
All of a sudden I became aware of my chest swelling and a grin reaching across the breadth of my face. I have been lucky enough to receive literally hundreds of letters from all kinds of people thanking me for this, that or the other, and it's not that I don't appreciate each of them, but none of them have ever come close to making me feel the way she did when she touched my forehead.
Like most Mothers and Sons, Mom and I have had our ups and downs. Most of the downs were from me thinking how smart I was and how behind she was, and most of the ups came from her having the good sense to let me think it and learn for myself what a jerk kids can be. To get to this point in my life and be able to consider my mother one of my closest friends as well as an advisor and a partner has got to be one of the greatest blessings a human could ever receive. If this little scheme of mine gets even one person to get that same kind of feeling from one of their family members, I'll consider this endeavor a huge success.
So, get your Dad and Mom, your Grandma and Grandpa and your kids signed up for a portal plus and have them put their age, (no hedging now), in the comments section and the fee is on me but you will be the one getting the most out of the deal.
I'm going to do my best to get Mom into the forums, maybe moderating the affiliate forum. She's a little shy and intimidated by the whole thing but I think I'm going to win her over. Look for her soon, and I'll be on the lookout for your mom'n'em.
Love Y'all

THERE AIN'T NOTHIN IN THAT CLOSET TO BE SKEERED OF. NOW TURN OFF THEM LIGHTS AND GET TO BED!
PS: Steven Camp, my cousin and Mom's nephew passed away Monday night at the age of 40 from an apparent heart attack. My Mom is on her way to Houston today to attend his funeral and not able to be here to edit the portal partner press as she does every week. That's the only reason I could get away with talking about here like I have in this issue. So please excuse my inevitable typos and grammar glitches.
